Temperatures in southern Australia have climbed as high as 117 degrees Fahrenheit this week. On Thursday, the Australian Open suspended play on outdoor courts because of the extreme heat, which exceeded 104 degrees Fahrenheit in Melbourne, where the tournament is held. This comes after Canadian player Frank Dancevic fainted during a match on Tuesday, then called the conditions “inhumane.” A Chinese player vomited during her match the same day, when a ball boy also fainted due to the heat.

Below, find some of the most stunning photography from Thursday’s heat wave.
